Don is still recovering from his wounds after being airlifted hospital. The hikers were saved when another group with a doctor among them arrived at the scene by chance. There have been at least eight muggings or attempted muggings of hikers and cyclists reported so far this year.
The South African National Parks (SANParks) authority, which runs the National Park, has now stepped up patrols. SANParks spokesperson Merle Collins said: “Given the extent and remoteness of the park, it is a challenge to have a presence everywhere at all times. “Our team is deeply concerned about any incidents and we request that hikers please save our emergency number.”
